An American television host was questioned by netizens for making nonsensical statements, leading to an investigation into the television station's license. He voluntarily left the show, effectively ending his career. Because of his momentary impulse, his irrational and unreflective bad habits, he lost the audience's love and tarnished his professional ethics. How foolish! Very ignorant!
Verbal karma includes spreading rumors and creating trouble; both are negative karma. For some, speaking carelessly is just a habit. They don't consider whether they are creating negative karma; they simply love to talk without restraint. Whenever they know something or think of something, they immediately tell others, embellishing and exaggerating the facts. For example, casually saying someone "stole" a pancake is a bad habit. If it wasn't premeditated and without malice, we can only say this person is pathological; there's no question of creating negative karma.
If someone knowingly speaks out of ignorance, knowing it will harm others and knowing it shouldn't be said carelessly, and fabricates false evidence while vehemently denying it, then that truly constitutes creating negative karma through speech.
The greater the harm caused to others by verbal karma, the heavier the karmic retribution. The retribution depends on the nature of the loss suffered. Those who create negative karma through speech will receive karmic consequences.
As the saying goes, "Reflect on your own faults in quiet contemplation, and refrain from gossiping about others in idle talk"—these are virtues of being a good person. Less criticism and more praise is a good way to avoid negative karma through speech. If someone only realizes they've committed negative karma after speaking, and realizes they shouldn't have said it, but it simply slipped out without premeditation or deliberate intent to harm anyone, and immediately regrets it afterward, thinking, "I shouldn't have said that!"—then they should repent.
If they know who they've spoken ill of, they should find that person and repent to them. If that person is completely unaware that they've committed negative karma and hasn't caused any harm, there's no need to repent; otherwise, it might trouble them.
In this case, use self-reflection and repentance. After cultivating the habit of repentance, the chances of committing negative karma through speech will gradually decrease, even for unintentional mistakes, because repentance itself is a method of self-correction. Ultimately, one can purify their speech karma.
The method of repentance is simple: repent once, without constant repentance. Constant repentance leads to self-pity and a loss of confidence. Repentance is simply acknowledgment. If the same mistake is repeated, then repentance is necessary again. After repentance, one must become an upright person again. Acknowledgment leads to repentance; repentance leads to standing up; if one falls again, repent again.
In daily life, try to train yourself to "think before you speak, pause before you speak." This doesn't mean remaining silent, but rather being mindful and careful with your words. Gossiping, spreading rumors, criticizing others, and criticizing behind their backs are all transgressions of speech and create negative karma; everyone should avoid them.
